The Bornean Flat-headed Frog, Barbourula kalimantanensis, is listed as ‘ENDANGERED’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. This small frog is found in the Kapuas River Basin in Indonesia. It is the only known frog species to have no lungs; instead it gets all the oxygen it needs through its skin.
As the Bornean Flat-headed Frog is primarily aquatic, found in clear, cold, shallow freshwater rivers, degradation of these habitats has been extremely harmful to its population. Illegal gold mining and deforestation of the surrounding land has also severely degraded the rivers it inhabits.
Unfortunately, the Bornean Flat-headed Frog is not currently found within any protected areas. Effective conservation of the large remaining forests that surround its range, and better regulation of gold mining activities, will help preserve its delicate aquatic habitat.
